Joel and I had a really great weekend driving down south to Napa Valley (wine country) and Sacramento (to see friends). Here are some pictures documenting our travels:

We ate Thanksgiving dinner here at the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake, a quaint town next to Clear Lake (a lake). It was a delicious meal replete with tryptophanic turkey.Joel takes a nap in the car after our Thanksgiving meal. He looks pretty out of it.Here’s the hotel where we stayed in Calistoga (and yes, this is where they bottle the water).
Joel’s really excited about imbibing this bottle at Ehler’s Estate. We enjoyed tasting the grapes off of the vines – they’ve got an extremely concentrated flavor (the wine growers intentionally keep them small for that purpose) that makes grocery store bunches taste like water.
Giant vats for wine at Clos du Pegase winery. It’s mind-blowing how much wine is made every year. The outside of Bouchon in Yountville, Thomas Keller’s bistro restaurant where we enjoyed a great meal with some amazing wines. The French Laundry is just down the street from here. Joel gives two thumbs up!
We stopped by the Culinary Institute of American (CIA), an amazing building for up-and-coming chefs. They had some really cool displays of corkscrews, which I loved. We drove down to Davis & Sacramento to meet up with some old and new friends. Here’s a shot of Isaac, Claire and Joel on the UC Davis campus with a sculpture of an “egghead,” one of many scattered around the campus. The drive home–encountering all sorts of weather! Driving back over the pass helped to get us in the wintry holiday spirit.
